Another major reason is that you have probably got a virus. Go and run a virus scanner such as one called AVG Free. You should have had a virus or firewall software supplied with your computer, but this must be updated frequently to combat the new viruses which seem to come online.

Lastly you could have spyware or adware. I do hate these pesky things. They run in the background collecting relevant information. For me it is kind of scary. Again you can have a free scan of your computer with Adware Alert at:

Good luck with your problem. I do know how frustrating it can be
References :
http://www.pcerrorfixed.com

I would start with using CCleaner the link is below. Run the Cleaner for Windows and Applications. Then Scan your registry for issues. Then, click on the Tools button. Uninstall any programs you don't use. Click on the Startup button - Right click and disable as many programs as you can.

This will trim down your system. If you still have speed issues. Go buy a new Windows machine and load Ubuntu on this one.
References :
http://www.ccleaner.com/

If you're sure it's clear of spyware and viruses...

could be that your internet connection isn't all that fast. you can test that at www.speakeasy.net/speedtest

you can try to upgrade the RAM (check www.crucial.com) but may find that it is rather pricey for an older computer

I assume you are on a cable or DSL inernet connection. If you are using a direct cable and not wireless, should be plenty fast. If it's a very old network card (10mbps) you might want to upgrade it to a 100 or 1000mbps card. If you have a wireless card (802.11b) you might want to upgrade to 802.11G or N.

Try another browser like Google Chrome or FireFox instead of internet explorer. Uninstall any junk programs you don't use, especially stuff that runs in the system try by the clock at startup.

A free but annoying way to speed up a computer is to reinstall Windows.
References :
The programs are bullsh!tting you making you think you have load of problems and making you buy thier product.

Each program might have diffrent definitions labeling whats wrong with a registy and whats not so the result on each scan on each program are liekly to be diffenent.

Just use this program.

Its free. vv

Why is my computer running slow?
I have an oldish computer that, until I started using internet on, worked just fine. I got the computer from a friend who i know kept it in great shape. However, I seem to have trouble with the speed of the computer. I've run anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, windows washer, I've defraged the harddrive, used disk clean-up, and also a registry cleaner. I'm starting to run out of ideas and was wondering if anyone had any insights to a potential cause. Maybe needs more ram memory? I appreciate any help to this problem.

registry cleaners?
I have downloaded and tried several registry cleaners and they all claim to clean vastly different numbers of entries? One would remove 67 entries while another would remove 255, ect.

Additionally, If I ran a registry cleaner, uninstalled it, reinstalled it, then ran it again, it would find all the same entries again. If I removed them the first time, shouldnt they be go forever?

I guess what I am asking is why is there such a huge discrepancy between how each registry cleaner functions.
